Long term activity helps those antioxidants work for you

Scientific research keeps reminding us that doing exercise and avoiding inactivity give you big advantages as you age and this study, soon to be published gives a little extra insight into why that is.

This group of researchers, who tested what happens inside muscle while exercise is actually going on, found that people who were normally active (and had been so for years) were better at fighting off oxidative damage to their cells: that means they could use the antioxidants they got from food better than people who were sedentary.

That's another bonus of keeping active - you can be eating all the differently coloured foods you can, but if you also exercise regularly, they will work better for you.

The importance of antioxidants, how they work and where you get them is explained better in the book: its about getting variety of different, naturally coloured foods.
