This is very interesting research from the University of Adelaide that suggests that trying to deny our liking of sweet tasting foods by using artificial sweeteners and alternative sugars can backfire on us.
It seems we can detect glucose in our gut walls (as well as our taste buds) and that helps regulate our body's insulin response. By trying to trick that system by using things that taste sweet but are not sugar, these researchers believe we miss that regulation and potentially risk type 2 diabetes and obesity.
This media release is about their 2013 research that the group is now following up by investigating the link between consumption of artificially sweetened foods and type 2 diabetes further.
